Professor Terry Hunt and his team from the University of Hawaii (in conjunction with the University of South Pacific in Suva) regularly hold summer school on Waya Island to carry out archaeological digs and anthropological studies and generally tries to eavesdrop into the past. Fortunately (or unfortunately) they sometimes stay at Octopus and share their knowledge and their youthful exuberance. Funnily enough sales of Coca Cola and chocolate bars soar during this period! Picture the surf scene “From Here to Eternity…” it’s a bit like that – but with clipboards and lots of digging, sweating and study….. They pitch their tents and bring an intellectual slant to the resort and help to make us realise how temporary our existence is in the great scheme of things. The digs are done in conjunction with the University of the South Pacific in Suva, and there have been some very exciting discoveries to date. Read more about their finds on Waya and the cultural/historical significance of their discoveries. |
